About Fatāwā Mahmūdiyyah

Fatāwā Mahmūdiyyah is a monumental collection of Islamic legal verdicts compiled by the renowned Hanafi jurist Faqīh al-Ummah Mufti Muhammad Mahmūd Hasan Gangohi رحمه الله (1907–1996).

Mufti Mahmūd رحمه الله was a senior scholar of the Indian subcontinent, a prominent mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband, and a distinguished student and khalīfah of Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlānā Muhammad Zakariyyā Kandhlawī رحمه الله.

He served the field of iftā for many years and became widely recognised for his deep knowledge of Hanafi jurisprudence, careful research, and practical understanding of contemporary issues.

The verdicts compiled in Fatāwā Mahmūdiyyah have become an important reference in Hanafi fiqh. The work is frequently cited by scholars and fatwa departments, and appears extensively in contemporary Islamic legal research.

This edition aims to preserve that valuable scholarly legacy and make it more accessible to students, scholars, researchers, and the wider Muslim public.

About the digital project

The Fatāwā Mahmūdiyyah digital project, powered by Istidlal, makes this extensive collection searchable and accessible online. Readers can search the fatāwā naturally in multiple languages, locate relevant discussions, read the digitised text, and open the original scan at the corresponding page.

The first ten volumes are currently available. The remaining volumes require further digitisation, formatting, page verification, review, and processing before they can be released.

The aim is not merely to digitise the books, but to preserve, organise, and make this important corpus of Hanafi scholarship accessible for generations to come.

This digital edition is a reading and research aid. Where exact wording or citation matters, readers should verify the text against the linked scan and consult a qualified scholar for formal legal guidance.
